Electric bicycle classes and Class 3 path speed

Iowa defines three e-bike classes up to 750 watts and generally applies bicycle rights and travel rules. On a bicycle path, trail, or bike lane, Class 3 speed is limited to the posted limit or 20 mph if none is posted. Operators under 16 may not operate Class 3 except as passengers; Class 3 requires a speedometer. No statewide e-bike-specific helmet rule was verified.

E-bike street, sidewalk, trail, and age rules

E-bikes may use roads, bike lanes, paved multi-use trails, and sidewalks except signed sidewalks and sidewalks along the public square. Class 3 e-bikes are capped at 20 mph on lanes and trails, and operators under 16 may not operate Class 3. The current City code includes these local rules; the adoption date was not confirmed.
